With these two organizations, Morocco's humanitarian Call received record and unprecedented support from 173 delegations, representing almost all UN members. This further reinforces the consensual and unifying nature of Morocco's approach to unify and coordinate United Nations action to address the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the humanitarian response.
The success of Morocco's humanitarian Call is a further illustration of the credibility and respect enjoyed by the Kingdom within the United Nations. It also attests to the role that Morocco has played and continues to play in combating the pandemic and reducing its impact, in particular the human and humanist initiatives of His Majesty King Mohammed VI to support African countries in their various phases of managing the pandemic.
Ambassador Hilale launched the Appeal as part of the proceedings of the ECOSOC Humanitarian Affairs Segment, which he chaired from 9 to 11 June 2020. The Moroccan diplomat had indicated, on this occasion, that "this is not just another document on the Covid-19 pandemic, but it is a call to action, because the international community must act now and collectively".
Indeed, the Call launched by Morocco proposes a series of concrete and operational measures, which are essential to meet the challenges of this pandemic. It calls for practical actions, such as facilitating the access, passage and movement of humanitarian aid, medical and health personnel and equipment, without which the humanitarian suffering, loss of life and needs of the affected people could be exacerbated.
Ambassador Hilale sent this Appeal with the updated list of the 173 delegations supporting it to the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, and President of the General Assembly, Tijjani Muhammad-Bande.
