This decision, which was adopted in recognition of HM King Mohammed VI's commitment to tolerance and peace, was announced by the former Mayor of Los Angeles, Antonio Villaraigosa, who read and handed to HRH Princess Lalla Hasnaa a Proclamation of the California State Assembly and Senate decreeing this Day.
The text of the Proclamation congratulates His Majesty King Mohammed VI and Morocco for "their unwavering commitment to fighting against anti-Semitism in North Africa through education, and for creating an environment conducive to inclusion, tolerance and peace", noting that these efforts can serve as a model for other countries in the region.
The proclamation underlines that the Alawite Dynasty, under the late HM Mohammed V, the late HM Hassan II, and His Majesty King Mohammed VI, "has demonstrated Morocco's commitment to being a voice of peace in North Africa and in the Arab world, especially for the Jewish community that has a long history in Morocco".
In a resolution adopted on this occasion, the Assembly and the Senate of the State of California underline the commendable actions undertaken by the late HM Mohammed V, which had made it possible to counter the attempts of the French authorities under the Vichy regime to deport hundreds of thousands of Moroccan Jews to a certain death, while welcoming "the current efforts of HM King Mohammed VI to demonstrate that the Alawite Dynasty has sought to create an environment conducive to inclusion, tolerance and peace".
In this regard, the document stresses that His Majesty King Mohammed VI continues the implementation of the inclusive policies instituted by his father and grandfather, particularly through the restoration of Jewish synagogues and cemeteries, while recalling that the Kingdom is the only Arab country to have a museum of Judaism.
"His Majesty King Mohammed VI leads by example" in showing how education can serve to promote tolerance among different religious communities and achieving peaceful solutions to some of the region's most pressing problems, the resolution says.
In addition, the text recalls that the Kingdom of Morocco and the United States of America have always maintained friendly relations, stressing that since the signing of the peace treaty in 1786, "our two countries have always worked together to solve common political, economic, social and security problems, and to plan for sustainable development all over the world."
