Before the funeral mass, a ceremony was held at the Grand Ducal Palace, where a chapel was set up to pay the last respects to Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg, who died on April 23 at the age of 98.
HRH Prince Moulay Rachid then headed in an official procession to the Notre-Dame Cathedral, as did distinguished guests notably King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia of Spain, Princess Beatrix of Netherlands, Princess Anne of the United Kingdom and Queen Anne-Marie of Greece.
Other Royal guests also took part in the funeral ceremony, mainly the kings of Denmark, of Sweden, of Norway, of Belgium, the princes of Monaco and of Liechtenstein, as well as several members of royal and princely families.
At the end of the ceremony, HRH Prince Moulay Rachid left the Notre-Dame Cathedral of Luxembourg.
HM King Mohammed VI had sent a message of condolences and compassion to His Royal Highness Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg, following the passing of his father, Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg.
On this sad occasion, the Sovereign had extended to His Royal Highness Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg, the members of the Grand Ducal family of Luxembourg and the people of Luxembourg, his heartfelt condolences and sincere compassion.
The Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg reigned for 36 years from 1964 until his abdication in 2000 and was succeeded by his oldest son Henri.
