The award was presented to HRH Princess Lalla Hasnaa by Hiroo Saionji, chairman of the Board of Directors of the Goi Peace Foundation, which was established in 1999 with the aim of promoting dialogue and initiatives for peace. Its philosophy and action are based in particular on the "Declaration for All Life on Earth", which sets out the principles of global responsibility for building a peaceful and sustainable world in the 21st century.
The award was presented as part of the "Creating Tomorrow Today" forum, which was an opportunity to present prizes to the winners of the International Essay Contest for Young People that brought together candidates from 162 countries on the theme: "The Change I Want to Make".
The Goi Peace Foundation's international prize has been awarded every year since 2000 to such prominent figures as Mikhail Gorbachev, Bill Gates, Oscar Arias Sánchez and environmentalist Lester Brown.
In 2018, it was HRH Princess Lalla Hasnaa's lifelong commitment to environmental protection that the Goi Peace Foundation wanted to reward.
In a speech on this occasion, HRH Princess Lalla Hasnaa stressed the importance of developing "rules and regulations, even restrictions to protect our environment, and safeguard the remarkable diversity of the planet."
“What is essential (…) is to contribute to the emergence of a different world – a world based on cooperation, in which the responsibility for environmental protection, is shared by all, requiring equal effort from all of us,” said HRH Princess Lalla Hasnaa.
“In regards to the immense challenge of protecting the environment, a task which involves all citizens, education should come before all other means and considerations,” added HRH Princess Lalla Hasnaa.
In view of the urgency of the situation, Her Royal Highness said that “it would be more beneficial and effective to give proper education to our children, instill in them another culture, and foster a different relationship with the world, and towards others.”
Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Hasnaa concluded her speech by saying:“I am a daughter of Al Maghrib, or the Kingdom of the Setting Sun, who has come to the land of the Rising Sun, to receive this Award. Between our two countries, the sun never goes down. I hope that eternal light will be the light of everlasting peace, which we dedicate along with this Award – to the children of our two countries.”
This commitment to the education of children, which HRH Princess Lalla Hasnaa defends on a daily basis with her Foundation, is in line with the values of the Goi Peace Foundation.
In 2014, the two Foundations naturally began a cooperation that takes the form of twinning schools in Japan and Morocco and is reflected in the sharing of experiences for the protection of the Environment.
On the sidelines of the award ceremony, which took place in the presence of high-ranking Moroccan and Japanese personalities and ambassadors from 46 foreign countries accredited to Tokyo, HRH Princess Lalla Hasnaa posed for a souvenir photo with the winners of the International Essay Contest for Young People in the children and youth categories, and President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Goi Peace Foundation.
Her Royal Highness also attended the round table on the theme: "From Intent to Action", which was moderated by three young Japanese on the ability of youth to meet different social challenges, their perseverance to achieve change in society and translate into concrete actions the will for change, and the importance of instilling in young people the self-confidence to overcome all the obstacles that can be encountered on their way.
