The lecture was given by professor Abdessalam Al-Abbadi, former Jordanian minister of endowments and Islamic Affairs and vice-president of the International Academy of Islamic Fiqh, themed "Waqfs (endowments) and their economic and social roles" drawing on the Quranic verse: "Those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing."
The preacher focused its lecture on the definition of waqf, its kinds and domains, and described its current situation in the Islamic world in the light of modernization and development while preserving its authenticity.
He, first of all, stressed the relevance of the theme in this decisive moment of the Umma's history marked by the search for solutions to economic and social problems facing it, underlining that the Waqf, when it is used wisely, could impact positively the economic and social fields and play a huge role in human, political, cultural and scientific development.
He said that the role of the Waqf within Islamic and Arab societies consists of financing, continuously and efficiently, actions beneficial for society, noting its particular interest mainly in scientific circles as show the multiple conferences organized on this theme by the Islamic Bank for Development and the Academy of Islamic Fiqh.
The preacher called for giving a new boost to the waqf institution and Ijtihad (independent reasoning) to find new waqf investment ways which should bring together modernity and conformity with Sharia.
The professor surveyed the most important arguments in favor for the legitimacy of the waqf based on the holy Quran and the Sunnah.
He emphasized the contribution of such an institution throughout the Islamic history and its positive impact and benefit for mosques, schools, and hospitals, underlining that it is an institution that meets society's needs at the individual and collective levels.
At the end of the lecture, HM the King was greeted by professor Abdessalam Al-Abbadi, Croatia's Mufti Aziz Hasanovic, president of the Islamic associations federation and spokesperson of the malekite Tijanes family Abdel Aziz Sy, and Khalife general of the Niass family Sheikh Ahmed Tijani Niass.
The sovereign was also greeted by Monsour Sy, scholar and poet of the Sy tidjane family, Saleh Barthonan Dolhay, professor at the Islamic university Hidayatullah in Jakarta, Adem Zilkic, president of the Islamic community in Serbia and Mohamed Ben Moussa Al Hassani, president of the Brazilian Arab university of cultural exchange.
Afterwards, Majid Boutaleb and Saad Boutaleb, sons of late professor Abdelhadi Boutaleb handed his Majesty a book entitled "Abdelhadi Boutaleb, a journey in thinking and in life".
On this occasion, the minister of Islamic affairs Ahmed Toufiq gave HM the King, Commander of the Faithful, a 323-page book issued by his department entitled "memorization of the holy Quran and its spreading in the Kingdom of Morocco".
