Princess Lalla Hasna, who commended the good work and tangible results achieved since the creation of the Foundation in 2001, recalled the various programs lqunched by the Foundation, and presented its 2012 report as well as the projects proposed for 2013.
Regarding the "Clean Beaches" project, a new vision is underway with more communes involved, especially in the management of their coastlines for the good of the local populations. In 2012, the program covered 71 beaches, including 20 labeled "Blue Flag", spread over 45 communes and supported by 25 public and private companies.
Regarding the Marchica lagoon, the Foundation had conducted awareness-raising operations and has offered education on sustainable development as a community goal, which will be widely spread on the Kingdom's Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts.
Concerning the Intercontinental Biosphere Reserve of the Mediterranean (IBRM), the Foundation aims to promote sustainable development in the region through a comprehensive program of education and awareness raising. To this end, and within the framework of agreements signed with partners of the Foundation, several education and awareness-raising campaigns have been conducted or are being implemented.
Regarding the Bay of Dakhla, the success of two previous projects led various partners to request the Foundation to launch a sustainable development project in the Bay and create the conditions for dialogue and consultation for the preservation of this area of great biological and ecological value.
In 2012 a committee was created to monitor the drafting of an action plan and the establishment of the Observatory of the lagoon.
Regarding the Qualit'Air Program, the Foundation has finalized the program to purchase air quality measuring stations. By 2012, the national network consisted of 30 monitoring stations and two mobile laboratories.
Regarding the "voluntary Carbon Offset" program, launched for the first time in Morocco on April 20, 2009 by HRH Princess Lalla Hasna, it continues to grow on a sustained basis.
The agreements with the various partners have led to the planting of 3,500 palm trees on the pedestrian walkway of the Marrakech Palmeraie neighborhood, the supply and installation of solar photovoltaic kits in 86 schools and 22 rural housing units for teachers in remote areas, the distribution of 500 bicycles for schoolchildren in the Palmeraie neighborhood of Marrakech (to encourage the use of non-polluting means of transportation), and the making of an Interactive CD for Eco-Schools.
Regarding the "Eco-business" program, thematic workshops were organized as part of the sustainable development programs of the Marchica lagoon, the Intercontinental Biosphere Reserve and the tourist centers concerned within the "Green Key program ".
With regard to the Environmental Education, the "Eco-Schools" program aims to lay the foundations of a learning model that is based on the preservation of the environment. Its generalization continues gradually covering 675 schools in 16 regions and 81 education authorities from 2010 to 2013, including 271 schools in rural areas (40 percent) and 404 in urban areas (60 percent).
Some 55 schools were awarded the "Green Pavilion" award out of the 105 candidate schools, including 63 for the 2011-2012 school year, during which 28 schools have implemented environmental projects as part of the Eco-schools initiative.
Regarding the Young Reporters for the Environment program (JRE), the celebration of its 10th anniversary was an occasion to assess this initiative which encourages students from 12 to 18 years old to investigate, under the supervision of their teachers, a topic related to the environment (waste, water, energy, agriculture, cities, coastal biodiversity).
As for responsible tourism, intended primarily for tourism professionals but also the general public, the "Green Key" program represents an opportunity to promote green tourism. Around 70 institutions have been awarded the "Green Key" label in 2012.
The new criteria of "Green Key" for the period 2013 - 2015, have been adapted to the Moroccan context by the national jury, and was then presented to a pool of certified establishments for advice and suggestions.
Regarding the "Marrakech Palmeraie neighborhood upgrade and development" program, the year 2012 was marked by the use of solar pump, a new irrigation system for palm trees aimed to reduce fuel consumption and improve air quality. Some 12,500 palm trees have been irrigated using this avant-garde model.
At the international level, the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection, which is a member of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) since 2001, has been elected member of the Executive Committee of this international organization during the General Assembly held in Dublin (Ireland) on June 9, 2012, for a period of two years. The Foundation will help develop the strategic guidelines of FEE programs.
The Foundation has applied as a future member of the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC), in order to be part of the UN's NGOs network, which aims to improve the population's living conditions and promote economic and social progress.
The Foundation has also joined the Mediterranean Information Office for Environment, Culture and Sustainable Development network (MIO ECSDE), which is internationally recognized as one of the largest networks in the Mediterranean in terms of the environment and the promotion of NGO's.
