Located some 60 kilometers south-west of Marrakech, this model village is aptly named "Shems'y" (Arabic for “my sun”), embodying the hope and light it brings to warm these children’s hearts.
Built in record time at the initiative of the Moroccan Association for Aid to Children in Precarious Situations (AMESIP), this warm, friendly space offers a family-like living environment where these children can grow up surrounded by empathy and tenderness.
Village director Youssef Lahbil emphasized to MAP that the aim of this facility is to create a caring environment which promotes personal development and social integration of children within the community.
“Shems'y, which is designed to be eco-friendly and earthquake-resistant, offers educational, cultural, artistic and sporting activities, as well as social and psychological support for 144 orphans, promoting the overall development of the children in care,” he added.
For her part, Fatiha Takhabazt, academic advisor at the Douar, stressed that a socio-educational team composed of young people from the AL Haouz region has been employed to assist the children's development and shape their personalities.
“Our role is to help these children acquire skills they need to become fulfilled, responsible citizens capable of contributing fully to the development of their community,” she continued.
In the same vein, plastic arts teacher Youssef Amir pointed out that the center adopts a creative and personalized educational approach, namely through games, weaving and drawing workshops that stimulate children's intellectual capacities.
To Kenza Elazzam, educator at the village, Douar Shemsy' is a haven of peace that helps children overcome the aftermath of the tragic events they experienced during the earthquake.
Spanning an area of two hectares, Douar Shems'y is equipped with all services to meet the residents’ needs, including catering, accommodation and recreation, playgrounds, classrooms, a library, a health center, a counseling center, as well as spaces to accommodate members of the orphans' families or their guardians at night.
The village is also a living space open to its surroundings. In collaboration with parents' associations and the local community, the Amizmiz community can benefit from the village's cultural and sports facilities, thus fostering community life and social inclusion of children.
