Members of the British delegation, on a working visit to Morocco, expressed their admiration for the economic, social, and cultural development of Laayoune.
British Conservative Party MP Lord Daniel Kawczynski, accompanied by Sir Mayaal Simon, said the city of Laayoune, which he visited for the first time in 2019, had seen "very remarkable" development in several areas and at all levels.
He welcomed the "special vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI to make Morocco's southern provinces a platform for sustainable development, like the Kingdom's other provinces," noting that the achievements in Laayoune could serve as a model for development throughout the region.
On the issue of the Kingdom's territorial integrity, Kawczynski said that he had submitted written questions to parliament on the recognition of Morocco's sovereignty over its Sahara, noting that he intended to organize a debate on this issue to give the rest of the parliamentarians convinced of the Moroccan character of the Sahara an opportunity to share their views on the matter.
During a meeting with the wali of the Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra region, Abdeslam Bekrate, governor of the province of Laayoune, the members of the British delegation learned about the all-out efforts made by the state, as well as the measures taken to breathe new life into the development dynamic as part of the new development model for the southern provinces, launched by His Majesty King Mohammed VI in 2015.
On this occasion, an overview was presented of developments in the issue of Morocco's territorial integrity, including the autonomy plan presented by the Kingdom, in addition to the serious and effective commitment to the economic, social, and legal development of the region under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.
In a meeting with members of the region's Council, the British parliamentary delegation received a briefing on the various projects carried out under the new development model for the Kingdom's southern provinces, and the positive impact of this program on these regions, particularly Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra.
The parliamentary delegation was also briefed on the region's potential and infrastructure in various promising economic sectors, as well as the efforts being made to ensure sustainable socio-economic development.
The trip also provided an opportunity for members of the British delegation to visit a number of development projects in Laayoune, including the City of trades and skills, the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy, and the University Hospital.
