"Following the acts of vandalism that took place following a football match on Sunday March 13 at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, which injured 103 law enforcement officers and 23 citizens, caused material damage to vehicles, state and private properties, set fire to a car and damaged several facilities and outbuildings of the aforementioned stadium, in addition to acts of theft and obstruction of traffic on the public highway, sowing panic and fear among citizens and causing a disturbance to security and public order, a group of 70 people, including 18 minors, suspected of having committed and participated in these acts were arrested," said the public prosecutor in a press release.
These individuals were subjected to an investigation, on the instructions of the competent public prosecutor's office, where they were heard alongside a group of victims, including members of the security forces, some of whom were transferred to hospitals to receive necessary health care, the release added.
The suspects were presented before this prosecution, the source said, adding that a request has been filed to conduct an investigation against 42 adults among them, for forming a criminal gang, sabotage of equipment using force, robbery, attempted rape and obstruction of the circulation of vehicles on the public highway, intentional violence during a sporting event, throwing stones inside the stadium which could harm others, insults and violence against public officials in the exercise of their functions, access to the stadium in possession of weapons and damage to public utility property.
After a preliminary hearing of the defendants, the investigating judge decided to place them in detention.
A request was also filed for the opening of an investigation by the adviser in charge of minors against 10 suspects prosecuted for the aforementioned acts and who ordered that they be placed in the pavilion devoted to minors in the penitentiary establishment.
Eighteen suspects, including 8 minors, were presented before the prosecutor at the Rabat Court of Appeal, while 10 other adults are being prosecuted under arrest for offenses of stone throwing and of solid materials in bleachers, participation in acts of violence during a sports competition punctuated by violence, abuse and material damage to property of others as well as deterioration of goods of public utility.
The defendants are also prosecuted for deterioration of stadium equipment, insults and violence against public officials in the exercise of their functions and possession and consumption of drugs, the release pointed out, adding that the minors have been referred for the same acts before the juvenile judge, who decided to place them in detention.
The public prosecutor's office will follow the investigation and judgment procedures of the individuals concerned, in accordance with the law, and take all necessary measures against any person who has undermined security, public order, property and other people, the release concluded.
